Hradec Králové is a town in the east of Bohemia and is the capital of Hradec Králové region. It lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers and has almost one hundred thousand inhabitants. Hradec Králové is one of the most beautiful Czech cities, has a very rich and long history and was the second most important town after Prague for several centuries.

The town began as a slavic site of a fortified settlement with a busy market in the 10th century and it soon gained control of the business route, in addition to becoming a royal seat and administrative centre. The town prospered until the time of the 30-years-war when town. Swedish occupation, the Jesuit arrival, violent catholicism  all put pressure on the town materially and spiritually. In the 18th century the town was germanized and destroyed during the Prussian-Austrian wars. It was in the 20th century that the town’s importance increased again and Hradec became a modern regional administrative and cultural centre.

The historical city center is formed by Velké Námĕstí. – the large square. There are many places of interest including the Holy Ghost cathedral, the grave of Jan Žizka from Trocnov. and the RenaissanceWhite Tower next to the cathedral which houses third biggest bell in the Czech Republic. On the square, there is a Baroque bishop‘s residence, and the Marian column built in 1716 as a thanksgiving that the black death remained away from the town. The town is also famous thanks to its modern architecture designed by Jan Kotĕra and afJosef Gočár Thanks to this modern look, Hradec has the nickname „Salon republiky“.

The atmosphere is enlived by a number of parks and colourful riverside walks. Every year, a wide variety of festivals, exhibitions and other events take place in the town, and the local theatre is one of the best in the country.
