Žirovnice town lies in Pelhřimov district in the Vysočina region and has nearly 3000 inhabitants. The origins of Žirovnice date back to 1345 and its history is related to the chateau, which stays in the place of the former Gothic castle established in the second half of the 14th century. The appearance of the castle was marked by a family from Kutná Hora; the family of Venclíkové of Vrchovišť. Since the end of the 17th century, the Žirovnice manor was owned by the Šternberks. The town was successful in developing the shoe and clothing  industry. The town became famous thanks to nacre industry, especially button making in the 19th century. The most important monument of Žirovnice is the Gothic-Renaissance chateau. There is also the neo-Gothic St. Philip’s and St. Jacob’s Church from the 19th century upon the square. The Marian column from 1777 is another valuable monument.
