Žďárské hills are a part of Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. More than a half of the area is forested and it was one of the reasons why there was established a protected landscape area in a large part of this territory in 1970. Through the area runs the border of the European water shed; Elbe-Danube. The whole area is very attractive for tourists and offers a number of activities. The main centre is Žďár nad Sazavou. Devět skal is the highest mountain of Žďárské hills. Žďárské hills are sought-for by skiers, bikers and mountaineers. You can also find a range of historical and cultural monuments in this area. The religious pieces in Baroque-Gothic spirit are remarkable. They were constructed by architect Jan Sntini Aichl and we can mention the Church on Zelená hora, which is registered on UNESCO list, and also many Gothic castles and ruins. The most famous are Pernštejn, Zubštejn and Dalečín. In the mountain areas it is possible to find wooden folklore buildings.
